Annual St. Petersburg Summer School in contemporary Russian politics

“Modern Russia’s Policy and Society”

We are delighted to inform you that St. Petersburg State University Department of Political Science is now accepting applications for the annual Summer School in contemporary Russian politics to be held from the 23rd of June to the 5th of July, 2014 in St. Petersburg.

This educational program aims mainly professors, students and researchers in Political Science, International Relations, International Law, Eurasian Studies, East European Studies and Global Issues. We also hope to foster academic exchange and create a circle of dedicated specialists from Russia and other countries.

The Summer School program focuses on topics referring to contemporary Russian political development with an emphasis on North-Western Russian Region (St. Petersburg and other Russian territories to the north, including such centers as Archangel, Murmansk and Petrozavodsk). Such issues as the USSR disintegration consequences, the Eurasian Union, the 2011-2012 election campaign, the human rights and social obligations are new but nonetheless vital for a better understanding of modern day Russia and her latest political developments.

The Summer School will feature some exciting lectures and seminars like “Political and Business Elites in the Russian Federation: anti-corruption policy as a political tool”, “Friends or Foes: overview of the Russo-American relationship”, “The withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan and the future of the Central Asian region. Is a new Russo-Afghan conflict possible?”, “Post-Soviet Integration Problem: from “Mineral Resources Imperialism” to Eurasian Union”, “Demography, Migration and Identity Crisis in Russia”, “Russian Civil Society resurgent: NGOs, Foreign Agents, Religious Feelings violation and other trends”, “City-Management in Russia: challenges and social unrest”, “New Faces of Russian politics: Volodin, Navalny, Sobyanin, Roizman and others”, and much more.

For the 2013 Summer School edition, we attracted a stellar group of faculty representatives from leading St. Petersburg Universities and Institutes. We managed to create an exciting and informal intellectual atmosphere through the organization of different lecture series, mini-conferences and lively debates. A success we are hoping to repeat.

The working language of the program is English.

We will offer you a full package of services including visa support, pick up service (from/to airport or train station), Russian host family or hotel accommodation (breakfast included), etc. Moreover, 8 excursions will be included in the educational program.
